Objective statement
Within the next 15-20 years I would like to have established my own authorship in creating original stories and characters mainly through the marrying of illustration and words whether it is in the form of comics or picture books. The publishing industry peaks my interest as well as the idea of freelancing in the editorial world. I also envision designing products under my name, whether they be apparel or toys. I would love to occasionally work on gallery projects as well as fine art installments as my understanding of art expands with time.
I can use this project for the last couple weeks of the term to extend the possibilities of storytelling through design and circumstances controlled by chance. I will achieve this by developing key illustrations revolving around the perspective of characters that fit into the Customer category of the MVIP card set. In this case, I imagine that this “story” will be told through the narrative of a Chinese farmer who lives with his family in the outskirts outside of a major city environment, but is forced to cope with aspects of former city life that is beginning to filter into the more agricultural regions he is familiar with. Population numbers are becoming more evenly spread as people migrate to areas outside metropolitan life, due to different reasons: Total mobility enables widespread travel, the suitcase nuke incident has increased the uneasiness in living near centers of political activity, and ambient intelligence ensures the overall safety of spreading out evenly. To The main point of view withheld by the Chinese farmer character, this evening out of population is not a good thing for he has settled in an environment where he has sustained his own family for years, and his independent water supply is now at risk of being cut short by falling into the hands of an overseeing economic regulation system in order to pertain to the needs of other families moving into the area. He and his family must also learn how to cope with the influences of unfamiliar ethnicities introduced to his former way of life. This migration also allows business to be thrust at the Chinese farmers who live outside of city zones. At first the main character expresses a concern for this change of lifestyle, but comes to embrace the benefits that a system of total mobility and an umbrella of various cultures can augment the quality of living.

ReplyDeleteYour description of goals and how you intend to weave this sections assignment into your plan registers well for me. The story you are telling is certainly linking strongly with the inherent content from the cards. What is missing is the formation of and characteristics attributed to, the farmer that will likely serve as your key character. Build a back story that revolves around the aspects of his, and his families heritage, love of nature, sense of harmony, etc., that makes the plight that much more dramatic for us to witness. You should also think about the secondary characters that will fold in and out of your narrative as well in this stage of development. The boards you have read well and have a great mood, but hardly convey a clear story as they stand...They need descriptive titles, or a clear sense of the start point and action unfolding as it carries from frame to frame. They need to be able to sit on their own, as well as serving as a tool for you to understand the potential of your direction. As for technique, find, or make the brushes in PS that allow for a "shift" action straight line so that you can develop the architectural features. It will offset the smoother airbrush and hand sculpted shapes and make for clearer and richer boards. Also, use hot spots, and sources of light to guide the eye of the viewer to moments of action, key characters, breaks in the composition, etc. *** For next week, I want you to have 2 painting under way. 1. an establishing shot of the farmer's life before the turn of events happened showing the flavor and tone of his existence. 2. One of the major events that causes change in your story. MG
